New Equipment & Capabilities

CASE is investing in new equipment to support your needs, reduce/eliminate outsourcing and increase efficiency.   SEM/EDS testing is always available as a drop off service at our Seattle and Portland Offices. Call either office to drop off or click here to inquire about the process.

JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) -  Seattle Office

Our new SEM is a high-performance scanning electron microscope for fast characterization and imaging of fine structures at high resolution. With a larger chamber and stage than our previous SEM we can now easily handle a wide variety of sample sizes and shapes and even operate remotely!  This low vacuum model provides the versatility of dealing with ceramics, plastics, and materials that outgas excessively or are non-conductive without pretreatment…such as those pulled directly from a fire scene.  Wood and other biological samples require no special preparation.   Thanks to the large sample chamber and multiple ports, our new SEM also features analytical energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) to provide micro and elemental analysis.

Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) - Seattle Office

We now have an Oxford Instruments AZtecEnergy EDS Detector. The microanalysis software characterizes material composition and offers our clients the ability to look at plastics, ceramics, metals, composites and unknowns using various display modes including, linescans, area mapping, 3D EDS and more.

New SEM Lab - Portland Office

With the addition of the JEOL system to the Seattle office, we are thrilled to announce that our Portland Office now has full SEM capabilities as well, the primary difference being the chamber and sample size capability.

Keyence Digital Microscope - Seattle and Denver Offices

Our new Digital Microscope combines 4 microscopes into a single system achieving 0.1 to 5000x magnification.  Designed to emphasize both high resolution and depth of field, it allows for observation from any angle.  Measurements are computed and completed in real time, removing the need for external software. Image stitching expands the observable area up to 200 times and allows for 3D display and measurement.

Environmental Chamber - Seattle Office

CASE has a new Thermotron SE-1357 Environmental Chamber for many types of testing. It is substantially larger than our previous chamber, with interior dimensions measuring 40” x 45” x 45”, allowing for the conditioning of more and larger samples. The chamber is capable of reaching temperatures ranging from -94 F to 356 F with a reported accuracy of +/- 0.9 F. A major improvement over our old model is its ability to control humidity. The chamber includes a low humidity feature, allowing CASE to attain relative humidity under 10%. Some standard test methods require samples to be conditioned at a particular temperature and humidity prior to testing; matching environmental conditions present on the day of a fire is a critical part of simulative burn testing. In addition to the ability to match environmental conditions for burn testing, the chamber’s controller allows for user-defined temperature/humidity programs which allows testing freeze/thaw cycles and more.
